The tie-back top is fitted at the chest, with a gathered peplum at the bottom and closes with an adjustable tie at the back. The gathered peplum has an elasticated section at the back for comfort and fit. The top also has the option for adjustable straps. It is a perfect piece for the summer, bring both comfortable and flattering. It can also be lengthened or shortened to your specific measurements and preferences or to make a dress.

You will need

• A method of printing the pattern.
• This top suits most light-weight and medium-weight woven fabrics such as cotton, hemp, linen or tencel. A cotton poplin or linen works particularly well. Check out the links on our Sustainable Sewing Club page of the website for shops that sell sustainable options.
• Light-weight lining fabric.
• Matching thread.
• Sewing machine.
• Half a meter of elastic (5mm in width).
• Iron.
• 10mm strap adjuster set (two hoops and two matching sliders). If you use medium-weight fabric, choose a larger size strap adjuster set. Alternatively, you can create straps of a set length and not use adjusters.

Printing instructions

For A4 printing, make sure your printer is aligned before printing. If you open the pdf pattern in Adobe Acrobat Reader (which is free), then you can select the layer corresponding to your size along with the ‘for all sizes layer’, deselecting the other sizes. If not, all sizes are labelled anyway. Print the pattern with no scaling (this may be listed as ‘actual size’ or ‘100%’).

There is a 1cm test square on page 1 to check you have printed it out correctly. After printing, lay out the pages referring to the codes in the pink circles (numbers refer to rows and letters to columns), butting the edges up together. Do not overlap or cut the paper; instead stick the pages together using tape. There may be a small unprinted margin at the edges of your pages; this is normal and we have made sure not to place information or intricate parts of the pattern here.

Our Hayley top and dress PDF sewing pattern gives you access to make both our Hayley top and dress yourself at home.

The Hayley design has a versatile wrap style with a tie on the outside and an optional tie on the inside. It has a loose and relaxed fit with dropped shoulders and a voluminous gather from at waist. This is our June top in a rich cobalt linen that has been laundered for a soft feel. The design has a simple neckline, with a peplum at the bottom and adjustable bow tie straps at the shoulder.  It has a loose fit resulting in a trapeze shape that is comfortable but also flattering. This top works really well as a versatile piece in a capsule wardrobe. It can be worn with the matching fitted skirt in cobalt linen to look like a one-piece dress.

We hand make each top in our workshop in Nottingham, England. Each item is made-to-order, minimising fabric wastage.

MATERIAL

100% European linen laundered for softness.

SUSTAINABLE

Linen is made from the flax plant, best grown in northern Europe. It is one of the most sustainable fabrics, since it needs little or no fertilisers and little water additional to rain water. It happily grows in poor soil, meaning it also  doesn’t really require many pesticides. Flax cultivation therefore has a positive impact on the eco-system diversity. Moreover, parts of the plant that aren’t used for linen are used to make linseed oil, paper, cattle feed or even soap.

As a fabric, linen is biodegradable, recyclable and due to its natural absorbency, it requires less dye than cotton. Linen is naturally stain resistant, does not pile, and is moth repellent. It is easy to wash as it can sustain high temperatures, is has very little if no shrinkage and is very strong. It also has natural anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, hypo allergenic characteristics. Despite linen being traditionally worn in summer, linen is actually very thermoregulating and can be worn in all weather.

The particular linen we use is produced in small batches in Eastern Europe where there is a strong heritage of spinning and weaving linen fabric. It is also woven in a mill run on green energy. The resulting linen is Oeko-Tex certified as free from harmful chemicals. Finally,the dyes used on this cloth are GOTS certified.

The labels we use are made from recycled fabric that is OEKO-TEX standard 100 certified. We also package the product in recycled paper and ship using reusable and compostable mailbags.

Our Penny tie blouse is individually hand painted by Suzie in a beautiful hemp and organic cotton fabric. The blouse has unique dropped shoulder caps, voluminous lantern sleeves with a gathered shoulder and loose-fit cuff. It also has ties down the front and a peplum-style gather around the waist for a bold silhouette. The dropped shoulder caps are fitted, providing a flattering shape that contrasts the volume in the sleeves and lower part of the blouse. The blouse is also easy to layer and brings statement to any outfit.

MATERIAL

55% certified organic hemp, 45% organic cotton

SUSTAINABLE

We make our blouse from a hemp and organic cotton fabric that is OEKO-TEX standard 100 certified as free from harmful chemicals. Organic cotton is more sustainable that regular cotton because the process is based on long-term thinking. Organic cotton farming does not use synthetic insecticides, fungicides, herbicides or fertilisers. Farmers maintain healthy soil through crop rotation, preventing the loss of nutrients into water bodies and so avoiding water pollution and the need for artificial fertilisers. Organic cotton farming also uses significantly less water than ordinary cotton, whereby farmers rely mainly on rainwater. Find out more about organic farming at the  Textile Exchange!

Hemp has fantastic sustainability credentials as it has a high yield (twice as much fibre as flax that is used to make linen) and it  has a short growing period such that it can be planted 4 times in a year. Moreover, it returns up to 70% of the nutrients used back into the soil. As if this wasn’t enough,  it also requires little water, reduces pests and doesn’t need fertilisers or pesticides. To top it off, hemp is the most carbon negative crop, absorbing more carbon than it produces!

100% certified organic Mulberry silk.

SUSTAINABLE

We make this top from pure Mulberry silk that is Global Organic Textile Standard Certified (GOTS). A GOTS certification means that the fabric contains at least 70% organic natural fibres; it is not treated with bleach, formaldehyde or other toxic substances; it is coloured with non-toxic dyes, and is produced according to strict social and environmental standards. Silk is a natural fibre, made from the protein that some insects secrete to make cocoons. Being a natural fibre, it is therefore biodegradable.

At ford&guy, we source our silk in an un-dyed state and then dye each product to-order using non-toxic dyes that are not tested on animals and are approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Moreover, by dyeing each product to order, we are ensuring that we do not waste any material or dye.

WASH CARE

Because silk organza can snag, we recommend that you hand wash this top and reshape whilst damp. Wash in tepid water with mild detergent. Gently squeeze out the excess water, but do not wring the fabric and lay flat between towels until you are ready to iron. Iron damp on the reverse with a fairly hot iron. Another option is to let the top dry, then use a spray bottle to wet the silk whilst ironing. Do not bleach.
