Make a jumper with Suzie

2 week course, Thursdays 4th & 11th January 6pm-8pm

4 spaces only

2 hour class each week for 2 weeks

Ford & Guy, 96 Chilwell Road Beeston, NG9 1ES

Join Suzie in this workshop to learn how to make your very own jumper. The Ford & Guy own pattern is a loose-fitting, unisex style, with dropped shoulders and ribbed neck, cuffs and bottom hem. Suzie will guide you through understanding the pattern, laying the fabric and pattern pieces out, cutting the pieces and sewing the jumper together. You will also learn how to master stretch fabrics and cuffs.

Suzie welcomes you to make your own customisation to the pattern and is happy to also help you with this.

The maximum group size is 4 for this course, so everyone will have hands-on help to ensure you have a finished product that  you are really happy with and your sewing confidence really grows.

If you choose to buy the workshop with fabric included, you get a choice of sustainable organic cotton fleece:

  • 100% organic cotton fleece in a classic light grey or dark grey

Organic cotton is more sustainable that regular cotton because the process is based on long-term thinking. Organic cotton farming does not use synthetic insecticides, fungicides, herbicides or fertilisers. Farmers maintain healthy soil through crop rotation, preventing the loss of nutrients into water bodies and so avoiding water pollution and the need for artificial fertilisers. Organic cotton farming also uses significantly less water than ordinary cotton, whereby farmers rely mainly on rainwater. Find out more about organic farming at the  Textile Exchange!

If you are bringing your own fabric,  check out our sustainable fabric directory for some great online sellers of fabric. If you prefer to see the fabric in person, there is also a fabric shop a few doors down from us, called The Fabric Place. Suzie is very happy to help you with fabric choice.

You can either bring your own sewing machine or use one of ours (please let us know your preference in the notes when booking).

This workshop can be used in conjunction with our tie-dye workshop, where you will have the opportunity to tie dye an item such as the jumper you make in this workshop.

Can I do this class?

This class welcomes beginners with some previous experience in using a sewing machine but that’s all. Our ‘Learn to Sew’ workshop is sufficient experience for this workshop. The workshop will take place in our beautiful shop and studio space in Beeston (see ‘How do I get there?’ below). The studio has an accessible entrance and tables at different heights. Please let us know if you have specific accessibility requirements.

What’s included?

  • Light refreshments.
  • The equipment and sewing pattern.
  • If you are purchasing the workshop with fabric included, this will include your fabric, along with matching thread and ribbing fabric.

What do I need to bring?

  • If you are bringing your own fabric, you will need to bring 2 meters of sweatshirt fabric along with half a meter of matching ribbing fabric and matching thread. Ribbing fabric is the stretchy fabric used to make the cuffs of the jumper- if you need a hand in finding this please get in touch and Suzie can help. If you have found a fabric that you love but it doesn’t have matching ribbing, that is ok, you can either use the sweatshirt fabric to make the cuffs (it is just less stretchy), or find a contrasting/complementing ribbing fabric. Another option is to not have cuffs but to leave the bottom and wrists with a neat hem.
  • You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you wish to use this. There is a loading bay over the road of the shop which you can use to drop your machine off if it is heavy before parking.

How do I get there?

Our address is 96 Chilwell Road in Beeston, NG9 1ES. There is parking on most of the residential streets around us and a car park a little down the road, too (Chilwell road car park 21 Chilwell Rd, Beeston, Nottingham NG9 1EH). You can also access us via tram– the tram stop is a few doors down from us on the same street (Chilwell road tram stop via the green line that goes between Hucknall and Toton lane). Directly outside of our shop is the Ellis Grove bus stop which is accessed by the buses listed here.

Who is Suzie?

Suzie is the owner of Ford&Guy. She started sewing from a very young age and is pretty much addicted to sewing (a.k.a sewciopath). You can find out more about Suzie on our About us page.

If you would like to ask any questions about this workshop, please use the contact form here and we will get back to you.
