linen draught excluder
Sustainable linen draught excluder filled with 100% recycled fabric scrap | Linen handmade draft blocker | Zero-waste fabric remnant filling
We make our sustainable linen draught excluder from a beautifully textured navy linen and 100% recycled fabric scrap filling. Our fabric scraps are offcuts from our other sewing projects and include a mixture of organic cotton and bamboo fabrics. These fabric scraps therefore eliminate waste and avoid the use of new materials, in particular synthetic fillings. All of the fabrics used (linen, organic cotton and bamboo) are natural fibres and so have great insulating and antimicrobial properties.
Our draught excluders have a small tab so you can hang them up when you aren’t using them.

Linen is sustainable for a number of reasons. Not only is it durable and so long-lasting, but it is also biodegradable. Additionally, linen comes from the plant, flax. Growing flax is sustainable because it can grow in poor quality soil, it takes less water than standard cotton and uses significantly fewer pesticides. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation state that flax uses 13 times less pesticides than potatoes. Moreover, every part of the flax plant can be used for various products, reducing waste and increasing profits for farmers.
Our fillings are also sustainable too! We fill our draft excluders with a mixture of organic cotton and bamboo fabric scraps. Bamboo is a fast-growing plant and does not need artificial fertilisers, pesticides or large quantities of water. Likewise, farmers grow organic cotton using rain water and do not rely on artificial fertilisers or pesticides. Healthy soil is instead maintained through crop rotation. This prevents the loss of nutrients into water bodies and avoids both water pollution and the need for artificial fertilisers. Moreover, both bamboo and organic cotton are biodegradable.
We package our products with recycled tissue paper and ship using reusable and composts or mailbags.
A great resource on sustainable fashion is the Fashion Revolution, including information on what to consider when choosing where and what to buy. For example, which fabrics should you look for and which brands are making efforts to make their supply chains more transparent and ethical.
