This small family business has been created out of a love of making and a commitment to finding ways to reduce the impact on the environment. Susannah specialises in using lace to imprint its pattern onto the silver and her Nottingham lace collection celebrates the historic local craft of the area. Susannah Brookes Sustainable Jewellery Design also create elegant and timeless pieces using wedding lace – perfect gifts for bridesmaids using the lace from the bride’s dress, or an heirloom created using lace from a dress of the past which will never be worn again.

Susannah Brookes Sustainable Jewellery Design’s business values are founded on kindness, on friendship, on communities supporting each other. Wherever possible Susannah uses sustainable materials. The silver she works with is 100% recycled, rather than being freshly mined; the workshop is free from single-use plastic, and rather than gift-wrapping in velvet-lined boxes, she has chosen to swaddle the pieces in soft bamboo wadding, silks and hemp.

“I am a designer and creator. I started my fashion business after creating rustic patterns from my experiment with scrap copper and then applied it onto silk to create silk scarves and ties. Since then, I have designed minimal and practical items, the first being my canvas totes originally made for my three daughters and are still selling well. Recently, I have been inspired by Ellen Macarthur’s circular system so I now offer a sustainable service for my customers. I plant a tree for each order so that my customers have chance to help and participate in saving our world.”

Amber Cooper-Green is a Nottingham based jewellery designer, interested in the investigation of materials and simplistic forms. Her main focus currently is the combination of wood, acrylic and metal. She uses reclaimed exotic hardwoods, copper/silver, acrylic and steel nails to create statement fashion accessories. Each article is individually hand crafted and holds a certain warmth, transpired through both the pieces tactility and earthy colour scheme, often interrupted by small explosions of colour. Lamination is the key process Amber uses to gain seamless transitions between wood and acrylic. It was this process and its material outcome that inspired her whole collection. Newer pieces are inspired by pebbles, both their shapes and her inadvertent attraction to hold them.

Sustainably made

All the wood and acrylic used in Amber’s work is reclaimed, redesigned and repurposed, from old furniture, floorboards and offcuts. The act of taking something considered scrap and making something new, beautiful and cherished by its owner is a very rewarding process. Not only is this transformation from waste to wearable art resourceful it’s also a mindset that is much needed in today’s throw away society.

Lee’s leather bags are built to last a lifetime with solid brass chrome plated hardware and chicago screws from our suppliers in Italy. Each bag is embossed in silver or gold with his ‘Handmade in Nottingham’ logo and should you ever have any problems or accidents they will happily repair it for you.

Lee makes everything by hand and utilises computer aided manufacture to make this possible. He uses the latest cutting technology together with traditional craft skills to create an affordable product that’s made well and from quality materials. Lee’s leather box bags are made with quality leather sourced responsibly from an environmentally conscious tannery in the Netherlands. My work focuses on colour, form and light and heavily features symbolism that is inspired by magic and ancient rituals, sound therapy and music, the sun, the moon and the cosmos. “Before making a new product, I do a lot of research into every aspect of how it will be made. I check paper types, print quality, and consider where materials will be coming from. I strive to make beautiful quality pieces that will be kept forever, even my greetings cards I see as ‘mini prints’ and ensure that they are printed in a way that means they will last. A lot of my work is paper-based, and where possible I use recycled materials, and environmentally friendly, non-toxic print methods. Risograph printing is extremely sustainable from the soya-based inks to the very small amounts of energy and water used by the machines. I work with small, independent owned-businesses. I build relationships with the people behind them and continue to support them over the bigger, and often cheaper, online competition. When sharing new work I will always share who I have worked with, and champion and recommend them to the other creatives I meet.“

Caro Marshall makes and remakes clothes and accessories from pre-loved and vintage materials, sourced from charity and vintage shops, jumble sales, family, and friends. As a result, most of these items are one-offs or limited in number. Her work includes machine and hand stitching, applique, and free motion embroidery. The up-cycled denim jackets can be personalised or you can request something similar in a different size – of course, it won’t be identical but that’s the joy of up-cycled clothes. Caro enjoys working with customers to give them something they really want, rather than having to settle for what’s available. Jackets for children are great fun to decorate and personalise – bespoke jackets are available on request, or she can add a name or an initial to many of the jackets available in her shop.

Suzie’s clothing designs pay attention to silhouette, drape, comfort and how pieces can be worn together. She loves to combine both modern and traditional silhouettes along with dyeing and stitching techniques from around the world including batik, shibori and pojagi.

Suzie creates each piece in her workshop in Nottingham and she pays careful attention to where she sources her material from. She uses certified organic cottons, European linens and cellulosic fabrics to reduce the impact on the environment and support safe and fair working conditions for those constructing them. In addition to this, she works creatively to avoid the generation of waste. She does this by making her products either in small batches or to-order and she repurposes all remnant fabric. Small offcuts are incorporated into patchwork items and smaller products such as accessories.

As Connor designs, edits, prints and packages all of his own products, he has total creative control, and it allows him to print on demand. This means that he never needs to over-order, doesn’t need to keep mountains of stock, and has complete control over the ethics of the materials he uses. All of Connor’s cards are packaged naked (no plastic) and are printed and packaged with recycled materials. If a customer specifically requests, or if travelling overseas, he will use a compostable cello bag to protect the product. Connor is working towards making his line of prints fully sustainable too, with most of his work being printed and packaged with recycled or compostable materials (the exception being some prints that need a greater level of colour depth- “I am yet to find a fully recycled paper which can do this, but am working on it”).

Jacqui-“This all came about whilst teaching myself to sew to pass the time during lockdown, and wondering if there was something useful that could be done with the offcuts of my own little projects, rather than throwing them in the bin. I started thinking about how this must be a much wider problem during the production of clothes, textiles etc. and started looking into it. This line of interest led me down the path towards Cutting Floor Cushions!”

Cutting Floor Cushions incorporates sustainability from start to finish – from the way they source and cut their fabrics, to how they package and post them out. Jacqui – ” I try to have as little impact on the planet as possible. My core aim is to be zero-waste. I use my own offcuts in other products like draught excluders, and make sure I cut fabrics using zero-waste design, which leads them to be non-standard sizes at times, but that’s the benefit of making my own inners as it doesn’t matter!”

Alight Candle Company use natural soy wax to make their candles and melts instead of other alternatives like paraffin wax. They do this because, unlike paraffin which derives from crude oil, soy is a bean (soybean) that is grown sustainably and replanted after harvest, meaning it is a renewable resource. Alight Candle Company only use soy that is sourced from the European Union where there are strict rules for the use of pesticides; no genetically modified seeds are permitted for soyabeans and there is compliance with EU-wide and international regulations on labour and human rights.

Sustainable upcycled hand knitted cushions and interior accessories with a love for colour and pattern. KnittingUpward source all their materials second hand, usually from charity shops. This means that each piece is giving something back in its creation as well as upcycling unwanted fabric and yarn. Each cushion is handknitted and hand sewn; the knitted front paired with a fabric backing that beautifully compliments the knit. They come with their own pad, in either feather or upcycled fabric waste inner. The covers are removable and machine washable.
