Hand painted kimono-style jacket with three-quarter sleeves

Product Details

This hand-painted batik jacket is mid-length and made from 100% organic cotton. It is a vibrant and fun addition to any outfit. It is versatile and can be thrown on over workwear or even a bikini on the beach.

I hand paint the fabric myself in my workshop in Nottingham using wax as a dye resist, a traditional Javanese technique known as ‘batik’. I paint hot soy wax onto the fabric in its un-dyed state and let it solidify before dyeing the fabric in navy blue dye that is safe for the environment.  The wax cracks during this process and allows streaks of dye to break through, resulting in completely unique, unpredictable and wild patterns over the fabric.

100% Certified Organic Cotton

We make our hand-painted jacket from organic cotton. Organic cotton is more sustainable that regular cotton because the process is based on long-term thinking. Organic cotton farming does not use synthetic insecticides, fungicides or fertilisers. Healthy soil is instead maintained through crop rotation. This prevents the loss of nutrients into water bodies and avoids both water pollution and the need for artificial fertilisers. Organic cotton farming also uses significantly less water than ordinary cotton, whereby farmers rely mainly on rainwater. Find out more about organic farming at the Textile Exchange!

The labels we use are made from recycled fabric that is OEKO-TEX standard 100 certified. We also package the product in recycled paper.

A great resource on sustainable fashion is the Fashion Revolution. This resources includes information on what to consider when choosing where and what to buy. For example, which fabrics should you look for and which brands are making efforts to make their supply chains more transparent and ethical.

Wash care

We advise hand-washing this jacket. Drip dry and iron on medium heat. Do not bleach. To waste less water, energy and to make your clothes last longer, wash with cold water, wash less often and don’t tumble dry.
